Nobelles (Concept)

Seventeen women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to date.

The idea behind this magazine was to introduce these literary greats to a wider audience, mainly young women who may not have been exposed to their work, in a contemporary fashion. Nobelles features their classic speeches throughout the decades. It centers an exploration of the female experience, touching on topics like race, fortune, and generational trauma. The magazine aims to inspire young women around the world by letting awardees represent their work in their own words.

The Process: establishing a visual language

While my overall aim was to play with strong feminine themes, the speeches themselves informed the colour scheme for each spread.

  • Louise's speech had themes of childhood, so I used shades of teal to evoke a sense of comfort.
  • Wislawa's speech focused on the beauty of poetry, so I used purple to portray indulgence.
  • Toni's speech focused on cultural injustices, so I used bold red and black to arouse feelings of frustration and grief.

The colourful aesthetic and contemporary typefaces keep the content rooted firmly in the present and attach a sense of modernity to connect with young readers.
